The Raw Chef TV | Using fresh aloe vera in your raw food recipes


Fresh food; better nutrition; improved health, more energy, and weight loss; easy kitchen clean-up; lower environmental impact due to less packaging and food additives—all these are positive aspects of a raw food diet. But you may be hesitating to try it because of the perceived disadvantages—unfamiliar techniques; special equipment such as dehydrators, high-speed blenders and spiralizers; unusual ingredients; long preparation times and the need to plan ahead to allow for soaking, sprouting and dehydrating; and lengthy and elaborate raw food recipes. Even worse is the fear of being limited to nothing but boring salads and one cold meal after another, especially in the winter when you really want warming foods.
Fear no more. Raw food can be quick, fun, and easy, and you don’t need to be 100% raw to benefit from a raw food diet.
If you’re interested in following a raw food diet or if you already do and want to increase your skills and repertoire of raw food recipes, Russell James, aka The Raw Chef, can help. He offers a wide range of raw food recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, beverages (including smoothies and juices), desserts and more. Many of these are quick and easy to prepare, while others are showstoppers for when you need an impressive dish for a dinner party or holiday meal. Some need special equipment such as a dehydrator, but many others do not. His demonstrations and explanations of such specialized equipment can help you decide if and what to purchase. Through videos and step-by-step instructions lightened with humor, Russell also teaches the techniques you need, from basics such as knife skills to garnishing your dishes so that they are as beautiful as they are delicious.
In this video, Russell James show you how to remove the gel from a fresh aloe vera leaf and use it in a smoothie. Aloe vera gel is often used topically for burns, but can also benefit skin, hair, nails and overall health when taken internally.
Choose a flat or convex aloe vera leaf. It will be less bitter and easier to cut than a concave leaf. Trim off the spikes on the edges, leaving as much aloe as possible. Place the leaf with the more rounded side up, and remove the outer surface with a peeler. Cut down with a spoon to remove some gel. You can also slide a knife between the bottom surface and the gel, though this will take some practice.
You can overcome the weird texture of the gel by using it in a juice or smoothie. For a simple smoothie, first juice some apples, a cucumber, and a lime. Then blend the juice with mint, Brazil nut milk, two bananas, and a piece of aloe vera gel.
Born in the south of England, Russell spent most of his teens and early to mid-20s working in various jobs, such as in fast food restaurants, as a manager in a supermarket and as a driving instructor.
It wasn’t until the age of 28 in 2004 when he was in Koh Samui, Thailand, doing a fast to clear up the skin problem that had developed during his time at the fast food restaurant that he discovered raw food.
He quickly got excited about the vibrancy and creativity of raw foods and the health benefits they bring. Spurred on by the fact that he’d never heard of raw food and with a desire to bring it into mainstream awareness in a way that is fun and modern, he set about following his passion, at first as a hobby.
When he posted pictures of his food on his blog, people started to notice and comment on how great his food looked. Russell discovered techniques and a natural ability to create beautiful raw recipes from widely available ingredients and started teaching people in his local area. News spread and Russell soon found himself teaching people from all over the UK and even people from other countries in Europe and the US, who would travel to come and be taught by him.
It quickly became clear to Russell that his passion was to bring raw foods to anyone who was excited about it and needed the technical knowledge to make it work.
Russell’s passion is to show you that far from feeling restricted on a raw food diet, you have an abundance of options, whether that being eating raw sandwiches all week or putting on a show-stopping dinner party for friends.

Raw Food Recipe: Walnut Tacos!


Super Easy dish! My all time favorite quick food is tacos, so it only made sense to try to find a recipe that combined the best of both worlds :) This meal is vegetarian, raw, and vegan :) Give it a try!

Walnut Taco Meat:

Raw Walnuts ( about a cup to start)
2-3 Sundried tomatoes or a Tablespoon of sundried tomato pesto ( optional)
garlic clove
cumin, cayenne pepper, onion & garlic powder ( or you could use a taco seasoning packet)
2 tablespoons soy sauce or salt to taste
1 tsp of olive oil

Recipe time! I love making these videos! Hope you enjoy – and remember, you can change up the recipe all you like, add less or more of ingredients depending on your tastes!! Adjust flavours to your heart’s content!!

To make:
1) Make your tomato sauce/paste:
5 sundried tomatoes
2 fresh tomatoes
1 clove garlic
4 pitted dates
2tbsp sesame
1tbsp lime juice
1tsp apple cider vinegar
1/4 tsp smoked paprika
1/4 tsp himalayan pink salt
1/2 cup water (you want a thick sauce)
Blend in a high speed blender to consistency and save for later. You can also make a raw cashew dip if you want, basically you want to use something that will make the carrot zucchini cakes stick together. Taste test and add spices/etc as desired.
2) SPICY SWEET MUSTARD SAUCE!
Prepare a little mustard paste 10 minutes before you blend the sauce. Mix 1tsp mustard powder and 1/4 tsp chipotle powder with a scoop of water. Once the mustard flavour is activated, add to the blender with:
9 pitted dates
1 clove garlic
1 tbsp lime juice
1 tsp apple cider vinegar (optional)
1 cup water.
Blend!! Mix in some brown mustard seeds for a pretty presentation.
3) Chop your veggies and add to the bowl. Use green onions, grate a full zucchini, use carrot pulp (I have about 2 cups of carrot pulp here, it was about 5 carrots worth and I enjoyed drinking the juice)
Add about a cup or so of chopped mushrooms and about 10 sundried tomatoes chopped.
4) mix in about a 1/2 cup of your tomato sauce or cashew cheese. Taste and add spices as desired.
5) Press into patties. Make sure they are THIN so they don’t take forever to dehydrate. About 1/2 a cm is a good size. Dehydrate for about 3-4 hours until a little dry around the edge and still a little bit moist, or as desired.
6) Serve with a salad and your delicious sweet mustard dip!!

Jennifer talks about soaking nuts and seeds, a raw food technique used in many recipes, and then demonstrates a simple, counter-top method for creating nut milk from soaked almonds.

Nut milk is one of the ‘miracles’ of raw food cooking. Made by combining soaked almonds (or Brazil nuts) and water, homemade nut milk is more nutritious than boxed non-dairy milk. And if you let the nuts soak while you sleep, you’ll only need to spend a few minutes in the morning blending and straining the liquid.

And when you’re feeling a little ‘peckish’ at night, a bowl of raw granola and almond milk is sure to hit the spot without weighing you down or interfering with your sleep.
