Our bodies are designed digest foods with ease and pleasure, however for most people eating a diet of denatured, processed and high fat foods digesting food is anything but pleasurable!
Our digestive system is perfectly adapted to a diet of tropical fruits and some tender vegetables. By eating a whole food diet based around fresh, ripe and raw fruit, digestion becomes easy.
The transit time of a food is the time it takes from eating it until it’s excreted. I experience the best digestion when the food I eat goes through my digestive tract in about 18 hours on average. The reason my digestion is so fast and effortless is because I eat a diet high in fiber and water content! The standard diet for most of the “western world” is very low in these essential nutrients and typically very high in fat and animal products. Meat has NO FIBER! It moves slowly through the system and causes toxic indigestion and constipation. That’s why meat eaters stink while vegans generally have less body odour, especially so when it comes to raw vegans and fruitarians!
Essentially, it’s about realizing our true dietary nature. We are frugivorous animals, originating in the tropics. Anatomically, physiologically and biochemically we are designed for a diet of whole, fresh fruits! The cow eats the grass, the lion eats the meat, they both have a perfect digestive system for handling those foods. If we eat too much tough cellulose (like grass and hardy vegetables) we end up with indigestion. Our ability to digest meat is very minimal if we indeed are able to at all. The meat ends up putrefying in our intestines and poison us from within.
